4.19.2010 - JYM Slalom Worlds in Hyeres Top Ranking for KA and AHD riders
|
Ihangloose windsurfteam went to the JYM Slalom Worlds in Hyeres, France
Windsurfers Aaron Etmon, Jean Patrick van der Wolde (KASails / AHD), Perry van der Wolde (KA Sails / AHD) and team assistant Petra Etmon flew to France to compete in the JYM Worlds in Hyeres , France . Tuesday, just after the Curacao Challenge, the trip began with a flight to Amsterdam and a connecting flight to Marseille , France on Wednesday and from there by car to Hyeres .
IMGP1481
The races would start on Sunday so we had a couple of days to get used to the COLD.
This first raceday was a great start with winds between 25 and 30 knots. 133 competitors had registered, including 10 women, 32 Juniors, 38 Youths and 53 Masters, the largest fleet of this event. This first day two elimination rounds could be surfed. Everything was so overwhelming that Jean Patrick missed his first U17 group start. With only 14th years old he ended with a 6th place in the second round. The youngster of the team, Aron Etmon with only 11 years old, did great in the strong wind and ended the day with a 29th and a good 16th place. Perry van der Wolde had to compete 52 masters and grandmasters and had tough competition. He ended the first day with a 22nd and 33rd place.
The second race day with a rather pessimistic wind forecast for Tuesday onwards, the Race Committee intended to get in the maximum amount of racing possible and at the scheduled start time of 11.00 it was looking good - 13 to 16 knots on the water. Only one race could be done this day. Jean Patrick was not able to reach the winners final that day and scored a 11th place. Aron had a problem with the light wind and was not able to qualify and was eliminated. Perry van der Wolde was able to reach the losers finale and ended as 22nd in his heat.
Day three no starts could be done by the lack of wind. A nice day in the sun on the beach.
IMGP1501
On day four the wind blew again with a steady 15 knots. One elimination round could be done for all groups. A second elimination round was started for only the masters and Youth, but during the first semi-final of the masters ton wind settled down and the race had to be cancelled. This race was postponed to the next day. Jean Patrick scored that day a 12, Aron a 17 and Perry a 23rd place.
On the fifth and final day we could find no wind in morning, but in the afternoon the wind picked up and the postponed race for the masters could be finished. The masters were done and a elimination round for the ladies and juniors was done. JP was not able to reach the winners finale, but won the losers finale and with this he minimized the damage and was able to climb up one rank and ended as 9th in the U17 class. Great surfing for this 14th year old.
IMG_2392
Aron Etmon was not able to qualify for the next round and lost his first place to his competitor with only 3 points difference and he ended as second. Perry ended his last race with a 19th place and ended his championships with a 27th place.
Curacao will organize the next Worlds and we have had a lot of fun and were able to grow in experience, speed and tactics. All of this was made possible with the financial help of our sponsors: ABC Marine, Insel Air, Princess, Goisco and subsponsors ACU , Benneton, DHL, Florida Express, Korpodeko, Mammoet Printing, Napa , Netvision, KLM and Price Waterhouse Coopers.
A great racing week and a big thumb up for the Hyeres Windsurf Organization and the IFCA!

3.19.2010- Farrah Hall USA-3 , Formula Worlds Championship 2010. Argentina
|
My first international Formula event is shaping up to be really interesting. Like all events in remote locations, only the more dedicated professionals show up. Logistical complications, funding, and the timing of getting new equipment are all a detriment to travelling sailors who don’t windsurf for a living, no matter how good they are. The challenging aspects of this venue aren’t in fact the sailing itself, but how to get around, where to live, and the crazy journey it is to fly here.
It seems everyone has had some flight drama. My flight stopped for 12 hours overnight in Buenos Aires, and I had to switch to another airport and re-check my gear. This was accomplished by taking the gear to a hotel overnight, and getting a ride to the next airport in the wee hours of the morning. However, this was not the worst flight by far. A few Polish sailors were stuck in Rome for 37 hours, and Marta, the 2009 Formula World Champion from Poland, had to circle Santiago, Chile in the air for three hours while the country experienced a second minor earthquake! Flights are not the only complication, as the regatta venue, Lake Potrerillos, is in a very remote mountain location 50 km from Mendoza, the nearest city. If you want food, you had better have a car, or commute 100 km round trip to the lake every day by bus. Luckily, I found a place with the Polish sailors in a cabin on the mountain 10 km from the lake (and we have a car!).
Apart from the logistics, Lake Potrerillos is incredible. The lake sits at an altitude of over 1,000 meters and it is 1,800 meters deep (no need to worry about hitting a fin on a sandbar here). It is surrounded by the Andes Mountains, which are incredibly dry and reddish. It is almost like sailing in a desert, with absolutely nothing around you but mountains and blowing red dust. It blows a gusty 12-17 knots every day with extremely flat water, water so clean you can fill your water bottle straight from the lake.
The other interesting and challenging aspect of the venue is the dust. The dust from the fluffy dirt beach and cliffs blows everywhere, and it is really tough on the equipment. Competitors keep the equipment in a big tent, which is quite far from the launch so that you have to prep everything on the beach and be really organized. Flying dirt covers everything, and it is a lot of work to keep the gear mostly clean.
Aside from the peculiarity of the venue, sailors are training as normal and really having fun in the optimal conditons. At this regatta, the fleet size is smaller than a normal world championship, but the level is very high as most of the pros are attending. Only a few girls are racing here (4), but they are all talented sailors from Europe (however, only 4 girls means no prize money!). The organizers may race our fleet with the men, which will be difficult but good training. I am getting faster in the flat conditions and am feeling pretty confident about my sailing. To most of the international sailors, I have unusual equipment. I’ve already fielded lots of questions about my Mike’s Lab custom board and KA Sails.
The Formula Worlds will be an interesting regatta, and all the sailors are happy about racing in this unique venue from another planet. I’m looking forward to testing my gear against the fastest and most experienced sailors in the world.

3.18.2010 - Jesper Orth AUS 10 signs with KA Sails
|
Jesper Orth AUS 10 signs with KA Sails
KA Sails is the newest member of the PWA.
For the 2010 season KA decided to step it up, and have registered 2 sail ranges for the PWA Slalom
The first sail range is the renowned speed machines the Koncept, a sail with 3 cambers and a narrower sleeve which has successfully driven no fewer than 2 sailors to break the 50 knot barrier for a 2 second peak!!! It also holds the all time fastest 5x10 second average speed on GPSSS. The other range is the brand new and more full-blooded KArace sails with a lower aspect, wider luff sleeve and 5 cambers.
This is what the KA Sails owner and chief designer Andrew McDougall had to say:
“When we got the news that Jesper had left Severne sails after 7 years, we immediately saw the opportunity to contact him for a possible future with KA sails.
The timing seemed just perfect! as we wanted to propel the brand forward and enter the prestigious PWA tour where you get worldwide exposure and recognition of your products.
Not only is Jesper a very talented and respected sailor, but also a very down to earth person with an unmatched knowledge from his many years of involvement in R+D. This indeed will be very valuable for KA Sails in the years to come..”
“We are an Australian brand based in Melbourne, very close to the renowned Sandy Point speed spot. Our possibilities for all year round R+D are now expanded to involve the windy coast of Western Australia, where Jesper has a full loft set up. This will set a very strong base for future development of the KA Sails and products.”
Jesper:
“When I finished with Severne Sails I got a few offers from different sail brands. KA sails was the one that I immediately placed highest on my list of options. I knew the guys well enough and all the passion they put into their sails. Andrew is a genius and is not only a gifted designer but is also behind the programming of the Mcsail design software that is used by many of the very top sail brands in the industry. They also have Martin Love on the team, an award winning Industrial Designer.
KA has been around for many years with great performing products. They even have 2 sailors that have broken the 50 knots barrier with a stock production sail!
When Andrew sent me some KA sails to try out it did not take me long to realize that the sails are fully competitive against the other mainstream brands, and even better on some points!!!
I’m very happy signing on with KA sails, and extremely excited to help with “propelling” the brand forward. It was a good feeling to sign up with a brand I have known for a long time and the fact that it is Australian based makes it just the right choice for me. In my short time of involvement I can already see and feel the talent and potential behind the brand. My motivation is 100%.”
Welcome to the Team Jesper!!!!!

01.02.2010 - Nah Skwell 7'8' fish at Florida demo day
|
The all new Nah Skell 7'8" fish stand up paddle board excels with its wide fish tail and ability to turn and accelerate in small and slow waves. For its small size, the board is very stable and can even be used by Watermen over 200 lb, as Steve, JD, and the SUP guys from Florida proved (see You Tube video link below). The board is small enough to fit in a Honda Fit car and can be paddled in 2 to 9 foot slow to medium fast waves. It is Equipped with a mast foot insert to add a sail for light wind wave sailing. We tested it with the KA Kaos sail, and it worked just perfect.

12.09.2009 - 2009 BABA Speed Quest Results
|
BABA 2009 Speed Quest Results
Craig Heffner sped into the overall lead with his September 28th trip to the Assateaque National Seashore while a last women’s division entrant Amber Kasbeer edged out Daphne Lathouras for first place in that division. Results are listed below, with the equipment used and sailing spot. Remember that while this is a competition, it is a friendly one and we share details on equipment and sailing spots so that all can benefit. Craig ventired to Assateague’s sound side and found a nice flat water side for South winds, we can all join him next year to try to break our personal bets. Flat water and good winds are key for fast sailing.
Open Division:
1) Craig Heffner, 29.948 knots (5X10 sec), 31.832 knots (2sec max)
9-28-09, Assateague, 5.8 KA Koncept sail, KA-2008, Fanatic Falcon Slalom 79, MFC weedburner 29, 22-28 knots
2) Tom Caswell, 29.653 knots (5X10 sec), 30.91 knots (2sec max)
5-7-09, Canadian Hole, 5.8 KA Koncept sail, KA-2008, Drops Slalom 48X270, F1 Falcon 30 cm, wind 22-28 knots
3) Roger Fitzgerald, 27.472 knots (5X10 sec), 29.887 knots (2sec max)
11-16-09, Rocky point, 5.3 KA Koyote sail, KA-2008, Exocet Cross 84, G-Sport weed wave 23.5 cm, wind 17-30 knots
Women’s Division:
1) Amber Kasbeer, 22.101 knots (5X10 sec), 23.6968 knots (2sec max)
10-14-09, Avon, NC, Ezzy Sail.
2) Daphne Lathouras, 21.399 knots (5X10 sec), 23.546 knots (2sec max)
7-27-09, Avon,NC
Craigs speed’s increased throughout the year as he upgraded his board to a Fanatic Falcon Slalom 79 and bought a KA Koncept 5.8 cambered Sail. KA sails are build for speed particular the Koncept and Koyote models, so no surprise to see the second place sailor Tom Caswell on the identical sail. Even the non cam 5.3 KA Koyote sailerd by Roger Fitzgerald has been clocked at 40+ knots by Australian Sailors at the Walbvis Bay speed strip. Flat water, consistent winds and dialed in equipment are needed to post top speeds. The 2010 BABA Speed quest in underway now, it runs from Nov 1st. 2009 until October 31. 2010. Send your track to Roger Fitzgerald by e-mail to fitz@qis.net

12.08.2009 - KA SAIL introduces the newly redesigned 2010 KaRace
|
We proudly introduce the 2010 KaRace! Compared with the Koncept the KaRace has a lower aspect, higher tension foil with a greater emphasis put on upwind performance and stability when overpowered. With a full width luff sleeve, 8 carbon /composite tube battens and 5 Cams, the draft stability is something to behold. The oversized bottom 3 cams provide the leverage for effortless rotation. A finer foil entry and the lower aspect ratio contribute to the amazing upwind speed and blistering acceleration. The power is locked low and forward. In combination with the large stepped clew this delivers a light and controllable rig ergonomic. High tech materials are in abundance. A lightweight PX05 scrim is used in the luff sleeve.
The main body has colored Xply in the head and foot , while the center is graduated thick monofilm. All the high load and stress areas are reinforced with Aramid Xply. Abrasion resistance takes a major priority with an all new thermo formed mast pad, batten end moulding and extrusions protecting all the lower seams and the “crossover” batten pocket. The all new 2010 KaRace. If you are serious about your racing, look no further!
